I started as a pharmacy clerk in high school and later completed a formal training program at a community college. Over the past 30 years, I have worked in various pharmacy settings and currently serve as a Pharmacy Technician III at Atrium Health. Throughout my career, I have taken on leadership roles, and even developed and taught a Pharmacy Technician and Sterile IV Admixture program at my local community college. What keeps me motivated is wanting to be a leader in the field of pharmacy. To build a name for myself and my profession. You never stop learning and pharmacy is always evolving.
Becoming a PTCB Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) allowed me to step up during the COVID-19 pandemic as an immunization provider. It also gives me recognition where I work and sets an example. My advice to pharmacy technicians is to take full advantage of the opportunities PTCB offers through credentials. Pharmacy is a dynamic field and the role of the technician is rapidly evolving. Be ready for what the future may hold!
The most rewarding part of my 30 year journey is seeing how much the role of the technician has progressed. Through PTCB I became a CPhT-Adv and have now earned every possible credential offered by PTCB.* After working in many varied pharmacy practices I was approached by the local community college to develop and teach a Pharmacy Technician program as well as a Sterile IV Admixture program. For six years I passed on my knowledge and expertise to the next generation of pharmacy technicians. In 2024-2025, I was also selected to be a test question developer by PTCB.
I love knowing that my role directly impacts the outcome of the patient’s heatlh. From providing skilled services to ensuring safety, technicians are at the forefront of pharmacy operations. My biggest inspiration has been my family, who taught me to strive to be the best at whatever you do. That is why I did’nt stop at just becoming a CPhT-Adv, I wanted every single one of the credentials available.* I want to inspire others to be successful.
*Mark was interviewed by PTCB before the launch of the Certified Pharmacy Technician Educator (CPTEd) Certification. As of March 2025, he is working towards adding this credential to his list of impressive of accomplishments.
