A comprehensive understanding of how to safely deliver immunizations and carry out related tasks not only results in safe patient care, but it addresses the public health need to protect communities from the spread of disease. The Immunization Administration Assessment-Based Certificate requires completion of a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program.

Earning this certificate demonstrates your advanced skills and commitment to patient and community care by minimizing the spread of disease in your community, especially as vaccines are delivered in massive quantities to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Complete the Immunization Administration Certificate to demonstrate your competency in:

  • Understanding immunization schedules
  • Proper management and storage of immunization supplies and vaccine doses in your pharmacy
  • Safe delivery of immunizations directly to patients
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other supplies to protect health care workers  and patients

Eligibility Requirements

A candidate must hold an active PTCB CPhT Certification and complete a PTCB-Recognized Immunization Administration Education/Training Program.

A Step Toward Your Advanced CPhT (CPhT-Adv) 

Active PTCB CPhTs who have completed at least four of the certificate programs (including TPV or Medication History), or three certificate programs and the Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) Certification, and 3 years of work experience will be eligible to earn a CPhT-Adv credential.

The cost to apply for the Immunization Administration Certificate is $39.


How to Apply and Schedule

  1. Log into your PTCB Account.
  2. Visit PTCB’s Credential Center (within your PTCB Account) and apply.
  3. Once your application is approved, you will receive an email with your authorization to complete your exam within 90 days.

The PTCB Immunization Administration Exam is unique among PTCB exams in several ways. These unique attributes are due to the significant public health need presented by COVID-19 and the critical role that pharmacy technicians play in supporting immunization delivery to combat the pandemic. 

  • You do not need to schedule an appointment for the exam. Once authorized to test, you may take the exam online at any time during the 90-day authorization period.

About the Exam

The Immunization Administration Exam is a multiple-choice exam that contains 60 questions. Be prepared to commit 1 hour and 35 minutes for the exam (5-minute tutorial and 1 hour and 30-minute exam).

  • This exam is only available online and is unproctored. 
  • This exam is open book, meaning that during the exam you are allowed to refer to materials and notes from your immunization training. However, you are not allowed to seek or receive assistance from any individual, or discuss the contents of the exam with others.
  • The exam is timed, so your opportunity to refer to materials and notes will be limited. You should prepare for the PTCB Immunization Administration Exam as you would for any PTCB exam.


Testing Accommodations

Accommodations to provide extra time are available for this exam. Candidates who require testing accommodations must request these accommodations during the application process. Accommodations that are reasonable and consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) will be provided by PTCB at no additional cost to candidates.

A panel of subject-matter experts established a passing score for the Immunization Administration Exam using industry best practices. The method used by the panel, as directed by a psychometrician, is the modified-Angoff method. This method requires experts (panel members) to evaluate individual test questions and estimate the percentage of qualified pharmacy technicians that would be able to answer each question correctly. These estimates were analyzed for consistency and averaged to produce the passing score. The passing score and candidate results are reported as scaled scores. The passing scaled score for the Immunization Administration Exam is 300. The range of possible scores is 0 to 400.

Upon earning your credential, you will receive an email invitation from the Credly Platform via with instructions for claiming your badge and setting up your account.

This digital badge will contain information describing your credential, including how you earned it. You can display the badge in your email signature, electronic files of a resume, and on social media sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.
