Tech Trek Navigator: Linda Harp, CPhT-Adv

February 19, 2025

After a successful career in retail management, Linda found a passion for pharmacy when a retail customer recognized her potential and encouraged her to explore the field. Now, with over 30 years of experience—primarily in a hospital setting—she takes pride in working alongside diverse teams to support patient care.

Tell us about your inspiration and career journey.

I was working as an assistant manager for a retail store when one of my regular customers, who had noticed my potential and strong work ethic, approached me and asked if I would be interested in a career change. At the time, I hadn’t really considered other career options, but the more we talked about the opportunity to become a pharmacy technician, the more enticing it sounded. That same week, I applied for a pharmacy technician position at our local hospital in Muleshoe, Texas. The next day, I got a call and was officially offered the job. That day marked the beginning of my life—and career—as a pharmacy technician.

What has been the most rewarding part of your journey as a CPhT?

The most rewarding part of my journey as a CPhT has been the opportunity to work with some truly great people. My career has primarily been in the hospital setting, which is where my passion lies. Along the way, so many people have influenced me to stay in this field, and I’ve built relationships over the years that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

What has been the most memorable moment of your career?

In 2024, I earned my Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) credential. There aren’t many CPhTs-Adv out there, so it means a lot to me knowing that I worked hard to achieve this distinction.

What motivates you to continue excelling in your role after 30 years?

My family has been my greatest inspiration. My husband, Keith, has always supported my decisions to advance my career and education. He was by my side through late nights of studying for my bachelor’s degree and was incredibly patient when I was stressed from working full-time while completing my degree. My children, Franklin and Lauren, have also encouraged me every step of the way. Their love and support have meant everything to me. What keeps me motivated after 30 years is simple—I truly love my career as a pharmacy technician. I look forward to interacting with my colleagues every day, and knowing I’ve been in this field for so long only pushes me to keep going.

What advice would you give to someone beginning their career as a pharmacy technician, and how has your own experience shaped what you love most about the field?

Don’t be afraid to try something new—you never know how great a career can be until you dive in and get your feet wet. Every day in pharmacy is different, especially in the hospital setting. Pharmacy plays a role in every department, from med-surg and emergency to respiratory, clinics, billing, and administration. I love being able to communicate with and assist all these different areas. Working as a team to care for our patients and community is by far my favorite part of the job.
