We Are the Voice on the Other End

"This pandemic has changed so much but what it hasn't changed is how we make a difference in our patients’ lives..."

May 18, 2020

“Working in a long term care pharmacy, you get to know your clients on a personal level. During intake, I speak to the client’s family to get their history and coordinate a plan for medication delivery. After they are set up, we speak to them regularly when new medications arrive or when the clients themselves call for refills or just want to talk since they're lonely. We cater to assisted living facilities which have been hit really hard with this pandemic.

Typically, a regular morning would be busy with changes from doctors or discharges from hospitals but that has slowly been becoming less and less. Now we walk in every morning wondering how many calls from family members or nursing staff we will take letting us know someone has passed on.

We are the voice on the other end of the phone that makes the older generation have a smile or a laugh, answers a simple question, or explains something when they are confused. Now, we are the voice extending our condolences to family and thoughts of staying healthy to everyone.

I wish for the time when I was so busy I would leave tired but satisfied I made a difference to someone's day, helped someone make sure their medication was taken properly and got them an answer for a simple question.

This pandemic has changed so much but what it hasn't changed is how we make a difference in our patients’ lives every day by being there at the end of a phone line or across a desk when they need someone to be there for them.”
