William Schimmel is Named New Executive Director and CEO of PTCB

November 27, 2017

Washington, DC -- The Board of Governors of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is pleased to announce that William Schimmel will become PTCB’s new Executive Director and CEO on December 14, succeeding Everett B. McAllister, MPA, RPh, Colonel, USAF (Ret.), who announced his departure in August for a new career. Mr. Schimmel has been PTCB Associate Executive Director (AED) for the past 7 years, serving as Interim Executive Director for 5 months from 2011-2012.

“PTCB is excited to welcome Bill as our new Executive Director and CEO. Bill has a unique knowledge of PTCB, expertise building consensus among our stakeholders, and an outstanding record of leadership. There’s no better candidate to lead PTCB as it embarks on its next exciting chapter,” said Larry Wagenknecht, RPh, Chair of the PTCB Board of Governors and CEO of the Michigan Pharmacists Association. “Bill demonstrates unwavering devotion to our mission, and the energy, enthusiasm, intellect, and vision to carry PTCB forward."

“It is a privilege to have this opportunity to lead PTCB. Our organization serves as a catalyst to achieving a higher level of patient care and safety,” Mr. Schimmel said. “Together with the Board, and PTCB’s talented and dedicated staff, we look forward to forging even stronger relationships with stakeholders while building on our culture of excellence. PTCB is trusted and guided by the pharmacy profession, and we’ll continue to respond with rigorous programs and high standards. Our data-driven mentality ensures our programs certify qualified, competent pharmacy technicians who strengthen the pharmacy team.”

Mr. Schimmel said he is excited to step into his new role in the same month that PTCB is launching the new PTCB Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician™ (CSPT™) Program. “The CSPT Program is the result of our long-term initiative to develop a program for PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhTs) who perform pharmaceutical sterile compounding and want to commit themselves to a higher level of patient care,” he said. “The new CSPT Program reflects PTCB’s dedication to ensuring technicians have the right credentials to advance safety in health care.”

As AED, Mr. Schimmel worked across the pharmacy community to assess ideal education, training, and certification requirements for technicians. He led the launch and oversight of PTCB’s Employer and Educator Programs, advocated PTCB’s mission to State Boards of Pharmacy, and renewed PTCB’s National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accreditation twice. He insourced exam development functions, enhanced customer experience for PTCB CPhTs, and launched a multi-phased research effort to examine PTCB Certification outcomes.

Before joining PTCB, he was Vice President of Development and Evaluation for the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence where he engineered the development of 12 computer-based assessments. He was a Manager in the Telecommunications, Media, and Entertainment sector at Accenture for 5 years. He is an ISO/IEC 17024 Assessor of Accreditation Services for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Mr. Schimmel earned a BS in Computer Science from Loyola University in Baltimore.
