Change in Process: Medication History Interviews

"As a technician working in the ED, I do medication history interviews with admitted patients before they head upstairs to their room."

May 21, 2020

“As a technician working in the ED, I do medication history interviews with admitted patients before they head upstairs to their room. As one of the first hospitals in Maryland to implement medication histories, I find [medication history interviews] now to be nothing like I’ve experienced in 30+ years as a tech.

During this pandemic, my duties have changed from face to face interviews with the patient to telephone interviews to avoid as much contact as possible with PUI and detected COVID-19 patients. The process changed slightly because now I have to make sure the patient has a bedside phone or I try to make contact via the patient’s cell phone or by contacting the person who manages the patient’s medications. It has been challenging during this time with patient surges and spikes in admissions to the ED.”
