Implementation of Mandatory Criminal Background Checks

by Laura Humphrey | Jan 05, 2015

After conducting extensive research and considering feedback from stakeholders, PTCB has decided not to broaden its role by requiring criminal background checks for initial applicants for the PTCB Certification Program.

PTCB continues to require candidates and CPhTs to fully disclose all criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions, and reserves the right to investigate criminal backgrounds. PTCB remains focused on advancing patient safety and care by strengthening PTCB’s Certification Program and recertification requirements.

Current PTCB Policy Requires Full Disclosure

PTCB’s decision regarding criminal background checks represents no change in PTCB’s current policy. PTCB continues to require candidates to fully disclose all criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions. Candidates may be disqualified for PTCB Certification upon the disclosure or discovery of:

  • criminal conduct involving the candidate;
  • State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure action involving the candidate; and/or
  • violation of a PTCB Certification policy, including but not limited to the Code of Conduct.

PTCB reserves the right to investigate criminal background, verify candidate eligibility, and deny certification to any individual. Once certified, PTCB CPhTs must report any felony conviction, drug or pharmacy-related violations, or State Board of Pharmacy action taken against their license or registration at the occurrence and at the time of recertification, to PTCB for review.

PTCB’s current requirements are described at ptcb.org and in PTCB’s Candidate Guidebook on page 12.
