Approximately every five years, PTCB conducts a job analysis to identify changes in the pharmacy technician occupation and then makes necessary updates to the PTCE.
PTCB announced the blueprint for the updated PTCE on June 6, 2012.
PTCB began administering the updated PTCE to candidates who applied for certification on or after November 1, 2013. Candidates authorized to test prior to that date were administered the previous PTCE.
Application Fee - the application fee for first-time and retake attempts is $129.
Exam Length - the exam contains 90 questions.
Time Allowed - candidates have 110 minutes to complete the exam.

Score Reports - the official score report now includes score information for each of the nine knowledge domains. This information is provided to candidates so that they can identify their relative strengths and weaknesses. Aggregate domain-level information will also be available in Educator Advocate reports.
Score Scale - PTCE results are reported on a new score scale, ranging from 1000 to 1600. This change helps avoid confusion for candidates who took the previous PTCE some time in the past.
Passing Score - the passing score is 1400.
Practice Exams - a new practice exam that reflects the blueprint of the updated PTCE was released on December 5, 2013.
