Oncology Technician Specialist,
Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital Cancer Center, Warrensville Heights, OH
Frank Young, CPhT, is an Oncology Technician Specialist at South Pointe Hospital Cancer Center, a part of the Cleveland Clinic, where he is responsible for compounding chemotherapy, procuring drugs and supplies, maintaining the clean room, and administering sterile products competency trainings.
In his role, Frank implemented the use of a closed system transfer device (Equashield) for safe handling of hazardous drugs. Transfer devices are designed to prevent the transfer of hazardous contaminants into the environment. Frank reports that using the closed system transfer device successfully decreases the risk of chemo spills and contamination, and improves safety for nursing staff, although the device proved challenging to implement.
PTCB Certified for 21 years, Frank says, “Maintaining my PTCB Certification helps keep me abreast of new pharmacy related developments, pharmacy techniques, and pharmaceuticals. As a PTCB-Certified technician, I am exposed to new opportunities in cancer research, and have greater access to current practice models. The most rewarding aspect of being a PTCB CPhT is knowing I am providing the highest level of care to our cancer patients.”
In the next 5 years, Frank hopes to gain more knowledge of new monoclonal antibody cancer treatments to extend the lives of cancer patients. Monoclonal antibody treatments are designed to enlist natural immune system functions to fight cancer, and may be used in combination with other cancer treatments. Frank also plans to learn more about genetics and cancer.
Previously, Frank was an intern at Cleveland Metro Hospital; a Technician Supervisor at Brentwood Hospital, where he implemented the UD system; and a Technician Supervisor and Lead Technician Specialist of South Pointe Hospital’s new 797 Clean Room.
Frank also contributes to the profession and community outside of working hours. He is an adjunct faculty member at Cuyahoga Community College, where he is an instructor for aspiring pharmacy technician students. His courses include Introduction to Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Calculations, and Pharmacy Therapeutics. He also serves as the Reverend at Second New Hope Baptist Church. He is a member of the Ohio Society of Health System Pharmacists.
