T-Specific CE: Immunization Update for Pharmacy Technicians

by Laura Humphrey | Oct 07, 2014

While every state and U.S. territory now allows pharmacists to immunize patients, the regulations regarding which immunizations can be provided and at what ages vary. According to the National Adult and influenza Immunization Summit in 2013, the proportion of adults vaccinated in pharmacies rose 13% between 1998 and 2011.

The pharmacy technician is essential to any successful immunization program. During interactions with patients on the phone, in over-the-counter aisles, and at the drop-off and pick-up windows of the pharmacy, technicians have many opportunities to discuss health care and vaccines. As more and more of pharmacists’ time is spent providing medication therapy management services, or MTM, pharmacy technicians are assuming new roles in the pharmacy.

Technicians may raise awareness about the importance of a yearly influenza vaccine, or about reasons one may need to receive a tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis vaccine, or Tdap. They can help patients fill out the vaccine consent and release form prior to getting a vaccine; distribute Vaccine Information Statement, or VIS forms; gather supplies for administration; and draw-up vaccine doses in preparation for administration. Through health-focused conversations, pharmacy technicians are helping to increase immunization rates in pharmacies and improve general health in their communities.
