Director, Professional Affairs

The Organization

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, established in 1995, advances medication safety by certifying qualified technicians to support pharmacists and patient care teams in all practice settings. Since 1995, PTCB has offered both the PTCE certification exam and a recertification exam, certifying over 600,000 pharmacy technicians. PTCB has also advocated for a single national standard for pharmacy technician certification that is recognized and supported by the profession.

Governance

PTCB is governed by a six-member Board of Governors that includes the Executive Director/CEO as well as CEOs of its founding organizations: the American Pharmacists Association; the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists; the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists; the Michigan Pharmacists Association; and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

The Opportunity

This position presents an outstanding opportunity for an exceptional pharmacist to impact the profession. The Director, Professional Affairs will promote PTCB as the national standard at the state and national level, stay current with relevant regulatory and legislative policy and trends, identify and recommend opportunities to advance PTCB’s mission; and foster communications with state boards of pharmacy, national pharmacy organizations, state pharmacy membership associations and technician groups. As a member of PTCB’s senior leadership team, plays a key role in advancing PTCB’s mission through participation in organizational decision making, operational systems improvement, problem solving and strategic planning.

Essential Responsibilities

Stakeholder Relations (80%)
  • Serves as PTCB liaison to state boards of pharmacy, national pharmacy organizations and state pharmacy associations.
  • Maintains regular communications with key group representatives, promoting PTCB as the national standard for pharmacy technician certification.
  • Provides specific resources to each stakeholder group as follows:
  • Provides information and counsel to key stakeholders during state and national debates, discussions, and regulatory fact-finding inquiries.
    • National Pharmacy Organizations - APhA, ASHP, NABP, NACDS, ISMP, etc. - Attend professional gatherings, serving as an informational resource to attendees on PTCB’s programming, promoting the value of PTCB certification programs and building strong relationships with group representatives. Use meetings as a platform for exploring potential collaborations between PTCB and stakeholders to help them achieve their goals and support branding of PTCB as a critical industry player.
    • State Boards of Pharmacy - Monitor regulatory and legislative changes that impact PTCB’s mission and the Pharmacy profession. Make visits to advocate in support of PTCB’s mission, particularly when there are apparent opportunities to promote technician certification. Also use meetings as a vehicle to share information on new PTCB products.
    • State-based Professional Associations - Work with the SLT to advise on the State Associate program including grant program design/development and marketing/promotion of certification.
  • Identifies and implements strategies to track pharmacy technician regulations, education/training, programs, and trends through state and national meetings, industry relationships, and other relevant means.
  • Assists the ED/CEO in representing and promoting PTCB at national and state conferences.
  • Staffs PTCB exhibit booth at designated events.
  • Identifies stakeholder needs through relationship-building and filters information about those needs to appropriate PTCB staff.
  • Serves as a spokesperson for PTCB as directed by ED/CEO.
Planning and Organizational Support (20%)
  • Provides timely reports on stakeholder activities.
  • Provides strategic analysis of pharmacy technician industry and recommendations for completion of strategic plan objectives.
  • Acts as an industry and stakeholder resource for all staff for other PTCB initiatives.
  • Work with the Marketing & Communications teams to develop customized content, collateral, and presentations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
A licensed pharmacist is essential.

Experience:
  • Minimum of three years professional experience with supervisory responsibilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of pharmacy and the work of pharmacy technicians.
  • Public speaking experience with the ability to present effectively to large groups and represent the organization in both public and private forums.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and social skills to relate to and interact with a wide variety of professional audiences.
  • Experience working with groups of professionals to complete projects and achieve goals.
Additional Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Excellent awareness of current pharmacy practice trends and issues that impact the profession.
  • Understanding of the critical role of pharmacy technicians and how their advancement supports expansion of the pharmacist’s role in health care delivery.
  • Demonstrated strategic orientation with the ability to synthesize complex information and patterns and apply to problem solving, relationship building and long range planning.
  • Outstanding oral communication and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write a variety of business documents and other communications with clarity, persuasiveness and professionalism.
  • Highly collaborative approach to work.
  • Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple projects effectively.
Travel:
Must be able to travel up to 30%.
